Final Math Problem of the Week is (Finally) Solved.

Congratulations to Hodesidahe for solving the phone number Math Problem of the Week last week.  For his efforts, he received a slice of pizza.  Since these problems have proven to be quite difficult to solve and have taken students a LONG time to solve them (even though they ARE grade level appropriate--in fact, some are from below grade level tests and contests--what's going on JC Hill teachers and students???) I think I may go to a Math Problem of the Month to allow for some more time for students to digest and attempt to solve these problems.  Look for a new one in December.

Math Problem of the Week #4

Some ketchup gets spilled on a napkin where you have written the last digit of your friend's ten digit phone number.  What is the maximum number of phone calls you would need to try in order to know what your friend's number is?

Write your name, homeroom number, and your answer on a piece of paper and give it to Mr. Restoule General in the Resource Room.  This week's winner will be drawn from all the correct submissions on Wednesday, October 30th and win a special Halloween prize!  Good luck.

Math Problem of the Past Weeks

There will be no Math Problem of the Week for this week, as it is a shorter school week.  Students are still welcome to try and solve the initial problem of the week, as Ms. Graham is the only one to solve it so far.  (Mr. Sowden's son solved it too.  He won't tell his dad how he got the answer.)  Congratulations to Cloe and Chris again for solving the third problem of the week.

The Math Problem of the Last Two Weeks

Well, it's been two weeks and we've yet to have a correct answer to the third Math Problem of the Week.  I do want to congratulate Ms. Graham on solving the initial Math Problem of the week.  Her perseverance and out of the box thinking allowed her to solve the puzzle.  Not sure if she has shared the secret yet to that first problem, so I'm not going to spill the beans here.

As for the responses we've received for the $10 000 question...they are all great responses, as I can tell by the answers that were submitted that you have done some work trying to solve it.  Many of you are close.

****THIS JUST IN...as I was typing this, Cloe in Mrs. General's room walked in to see me with the CORRECT ANSWER!!!  WAY TO GO, Cloe!  She is the first one to solve the problem, and she has been working hard at it.  There's still a few more hours for people to get their answers in, then I will update the blog to announce the winner.

Back to the incorrect responses...we had $123.45 (close, but too low), another two answers of $555.55555 (you can round that number to two decimal points, girls, since we are talking about money amounts!), $370, 370 (much too high for the first guy to have, that's more than $10 000!!) and two more responses of $1 111 with a remainder of 1 (that's an excellent response, but that pesky remainder doesn't happen in the correct answer---try again!  That answer works if there were only three people in the family.)

****Inspired by Cloe's discovery, we have another puzzle solver.  Chris in 7-3 has finally cracked the problem.  He needed to work out a few key errors in his solution process but he eventually got it. Perseverance works!

The Math Problem of the Week Returns!

My brother is three times as rich as me,

We only had three entries to last week's problem, none of which were correct, so we are extending the Math Problem of the Week (above) for one more week.  Those three entries had some excellent answers, that were certainly numbers or amounts you would get trying to figure out the answer.  I will give you a hint to help you this week.  The person in the math question has more than $100 but less than $1000.

Good luck!  Get your answers in by Thursday morning.  Anyone who entered last week can submit a new entry this week.

We Have a Winner!!!

Congratulations to Chris in 7-3 for correctly answering the Math Problem of the Week.  We had 10 students submit responses but only one correct response.  Incorrect answers included 144 eggs (two responses), 36 eggs (one response), 432 eggs (two responses), 12 eggs (three responses) and 134 eggs (one response).

In the spirit of math learning, I will let Chris explain to anyone who wants to know the answer how he got the correct response.  I really like seeing the work that some of you provided, as it shows the strategy you applied.  Some of you had the right idea, but a wrong application of the math.

The Math Problem of the Week #2

Three hens laid 3 eggs in 3 days.

How many eggs will 12 hens lay in 12 days?

After one week, no one has yet to solve the problem below, our first Math Problem of the Week.  I commend the students that have approached me to submit answers, but unfortunately, none of the responses I received were correct. I will still accept any responses but there's a new problem for this week (see above).  When you think you know the answer, write your name and homeroom number on a piece of paper, along with the answer, and bring it to Mr. Restoule General in the resource room.

Every Thursday, Mr. Restoule General will put all the correct answers into a draw and pull out a winner. The winner will receive a free slice of pizza on Friday.  Correct answers will stay in the draw for future prizes.
