Time is Ticking

OHSWEKEN:  There still remains a coaching vacancy for the position of Head Coach of the JC Hill Student Squad. There was some speculation that the search would be quick, but as time has worn on, it became a running joke that the Toronto Maple Leafs would find their GM before the students replaced their coach.
Well, here it is, late December, and the coaching position remains unfilled, while Brian Burke has been hired to turn the Leafs around.
Since the firing of Coach Restoule General in the spring of this year, it is uncertain how many people have been interviewed or approached about the head coaching duties.  The immediate selection of ex-Physical Education teacher, Miss General, was thought to be a given, but her retirement has left a void of possible candidates for the role.

As of press time, the possible candidates included, but were not limited to, Coach Ireland (who has had some recent basketball success), Coach Jamieson (who runs a no-nonsense show), Coach Dunnigan (who may choose to lace up for the teachers instead, barring his injury status) and the Coaching tandem of Johnson, VanEvery, Hill & Hill (who have been known to "holla at their boys" on numerous occasions).  It was not ruled out that the students might promote from within, and choose one of their own, namely, Coach Watts (who knows his share of losing teams and hopeless efforts).

It should be an interesting week, but that coaching seat needs to be filled for Friday.

Assumption Concert

Music for the Mind

We had a neat performance from the Assumption College Vocal and Instrument Bands today. They played some tunes and sang some songs and talked about some of the instruments and vocal parts. It was a nice treat, especially since they came to our school. Hopefully, it encourages a few more students to try their hand at music in high school.

i wish i'd known that you didn't have to already know how to play an instrument to take music back when i was in high school. i thought they were all 10 year pros that took music. It wasn't until university that i took up the trombone and loved every minute of it. It's a great experience for anyone to learn how to play or sing, as it stimulates different parts of the brain and actually improves your ability to learn almost anything. If you don't believe me, check out the science.

Final Arts Assignments

A reminder to grade 8 students that your lip syncs are similar to high school exams. You MUST attend school that day and complete the lip sync or you will get a zero on the assignment. Only for EXTREME circumstances will a student be allowed to do the lip sync on a later date, and this MUST be discussed with the teacher in advance. Lip sync dates are on the sidebar.

A second reminder about the other two assignments due in The Arts. Your evaluation of a live performance AND your labelled diagram of a proscenium stage need to be in your duotang and put in the boxes in The Arts' classroom before Dec. 19th, or you will not receive a mark. Make sure you are assuming your responsibilities as a student.

Co-operative Education Term 2

I will be doing presentations to the grade 8 classes next week . Applications for term 2 will be available for interested students.

Co-operative Education Term 1

Just a reminder to all co-op students that you will complete your placement on Friday December 12. Some students may be asked by their supervisor to help out during the last week of school and will need to speak to their homeroom teacher for permission.
Projects are due in 2 weeks, so be sure to have all of your information , pictures, pamphlets etc that you will need. You have 2 project choices but will only complete 1 of the projects. If some students wish to complete a display board, I will be available to help on Tues and Wed of the next 2 weeks, during your activity time. Your final report will reflect your weekly journal entries, attendance and project.
Thanks to the 33 students who participated in supporting our community through volunteerism. I look forward to a great term 2 with our students.

MS Read-a-thon Totals

After what started as a trickle, turned out to be a resounding success. This year's MS Read-a-thon raised $600 more than last year, thanks to 15 more participants. The total after last Thursday is $2,152.25 collected by 50 students. Remember, any other money collected needs to be brought in right away.

The results are not final until the MS Society collects and counts the money, but the top 3 classes are:

In third place, Mrs. Martin's 8-2 class with an average of $15.56 per student. 8-2 should be proud that they had the most participants in the entire school, as well as the most minutes read, led by Raycine's school leading 1440 minutes. How's that Twilight series going, Raycine?

In second place, Mr. Sowden's 7-2 class with a $16.00 average. Mr. Sowden's class had the second highest fundraiser, Kaitlyn. Great job, Kaitlyn and classmates.

In first place, coming out of nowhere, with a $16.75 average, thanks to Hannah's school best total of $233.00, is Mr. Hickey's 8-1 class.

A decision will be made soon about rescheduling the dance or rewarding participants in some other way. Once the MS Society has confirmed the totals and sent out individual prizes, a date for the pizza party will be made.

A huge thanks to all the teachers and students who have contributed their time and effort for a cause that is very personal for several staff members. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You have all made a difference in the lives of people affected by Multiple Sclerosis. You should be proud of a job well done!

MS Update 3

First, the bad news. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of participants, the MS Dance is cancelled for tomorrow. It just did not seem reasonable to hold a dance for the 25 students that brought in money. Even if a significant number of students returned their envelopes tomorrow, it still wouldn't warrant a school wide dance.

MS envelopes and money should still come in tomorrow and will still be collected. Each student received an envelope and should return it, whether they got sponsors or not.

Now, for the good news. Students who raised over $20 will still be rewarded and are still eligible for the pizza party and individual prizes. We briefly discussed possible rewards at the staff meeting last night, and what we have in mind as an alternative award is actually much better than a dance, if you ask me. Thanks to everyone who participated. It’s too bad we did not have a greater participation rate. Hopefully a whole bunch of envelopes come in tomorrow!!!

The current standings after today remains unchanged from yesterday, but it was neck and neck and neck, all day with every new envelope resulting in a lead change. The top 3 classes jockeying for position are:

3. Mrs. Martin's Class
2. Mr. Sowden's Class
1. Mrs. Sloan's Class

There is a slim margin of an 18 cent average separating first and second. All three classes have about 5 students who have brought their envelopes in. Great work 7-1, 7-2, and 8-2!!

MS Update 2

After Day 2 of envelope collection, the school total is now $454.75 raised by 15 students. Due to the underwhelming participation rate, the MS Dance may have to be cancelled. Students who raised over $20, DON'T WORRY, you will still be rewarded in the future if the dance is cancelled.

Mrs. Sloan's class remains in first place, Mr. Sowden's class has taken over second place, and Mrs. Martin's class, with a third of the total participants, has moved into third place. Money MUST be brought in today or tomorrow morning. A decision on the dance will be made by the end of today, based on the envelopes collected.

MS Update

After today, a total of 10 students have raised just under $350.00, which is an average of about $35/student.
The class with the highest average is Mrs. Sloan's class (on account of ONE student with the highest total in the school so far).
Second place currently belongs to Mrs. Montour's class, with third place being Mr. Sowden's class.
The class with the most participants so far is Mrs. Martin's class.
Keep it up, JC Hill! You're off to a good start.
Last year's total was $1, 564.75. We can beat that. Let's go!!!

Events This Week

A reminder to everyone, the MS Read-a-thon reading period has now ended. You need to be collecting the money from your sponsors and returning it to the school this week. You can bring it any day up until Thursday. Any student who has raised $20 or more will be allowed to go to a celebration dance on Thursday afternoon (more details to come about the dance).

If, for some reason, you haven't collected all your money by Thursday, you MUST STILL BRING the MONEY IN. However, you will not be able to go to the dance, regardless of how much money you have been sponsored, unless you bring the money before the 20th, which is Thursday.

As of Friday the 14th, 5 students had returned their envelopes, 750 minutes of reading were logged, and $218.00 has been raised. That's an average of 150 minutes read and $43.60 raised per student. Excellent start, JC Hill!! At that rate, less than 100 students have to bring in the same average for Mr. Restoule General to dye his hair platinum blonde!

Another reminder, there is a Home & School meeting this Tuesday from 5pm to 6pm. This is the last meeting before the Toy Bingo on November 29th, so it is important that parents are involved and attend. Thanks to those who have already returned their volunteer forms in advance of this meeting, which greatly helps with planning.
